Will grimaced, pain radiating through his entire body. His shoulder and back were particularly sore where he landed on the stones. Scooting up in the bed, he looked at his brother Graham. “I need you to watch Eirwen while I am in this bed.”
“Of course, brother.” Graham patted him on the arm. “I will make sure no harm comes to her.”
Will shook his head. “That’s just it. I didn’t understand till now but of course it makes sense. The White Lady can’t hurt, Eirwen. She’s never been able to hurt her although Eirwen somehow believes that her stepmother still can. The power has always been Eirwen’s. She proved that today.”
“But then why is Eirwen convinced she will die?” Graham wrinkled his brow.
“Well, she’s watched everyone she loves die and she’d never voluntarily hurt anyone or anything. It isn’t her nature. She’ll try to run away first, in an attempt to protect me. She’s said as much. But I wonder if she isn’t also afraid to love.”
“So I’m not protecting, Eirwen?” Graham quirked an eyebrow. “As much as I’m jailing her?”
Will scowled at his brother. “You needn’t say it like that.”
Patting him on the shoulder, Graham gave him a wink and a mischievous grin. “I mean, Charlotte wanted to run away too. She just wanted me to come with her. But of course, I’ve never had a problem with women wanting to stay by my side.”
If his limbs were functioning properly, he would have punched Graham’s arm as hard as he could. “Just watch her. Without me to fight for, I think she wouldn’t fight at all and then she’ll be back in The White Lady’s clutches.”
Giving a nod, Graham called Tom and Eirwen back in the room. Eirwen sat down next to him, worry creasing her brow.
“I’ll be fine, Eirwen. Don’t fret.” He lifted a heavy hand to pat hers. She clutched it in her own, staring down at him.
“I’d give anything to take your pain away. I am so sorry.” And just like that, a lightness spread through the limb.
“Eirwen,” he sat up straighter as the lightness spread through down his chest and into his legs. “Don’t drain your magic healing me.” He tried to pull the hand away but he was still weak and she held fast.
“It’s what I have to give you, all I have.” She held tight, lifting the hand, to press the back of it to her cheek. “I would give you everything.”
Will’s eyes locked with hers but he heard his brothers leave the room. “You will.” He gave her fingers a tiny squeeze. “And I will give you everything.”
Pausing before she spoke, she looked away, her eyes cast to the floor. “You don’t know that. Today proved she’s too strong. I won’t watch her take you away.”
“I know, but don’t you see, you’re stronger than her. And holding my hand, she can’t defeat us.”
Eirwen didn’t respond and fear rose in his chest. He had to trust Graham now to keep her here and he had to convince her that she could have a future if she fought for it.
